A 62-year-old woman, of Bon Accord, Tobago, is the third death due to COVID-19.
According to a release from the Tobago Regional Health Authority, the woman, who also had comorbidities succumbed to COVID-19 related symptoms on Sunday.
A close relative of the deceased said both the COVID-19 diagnosis and the passing took the entire family by surprise.
They said the woman, who had a pre-existing medical condition, had been ailing for some time and was therefore restricted to her home.
According to the relative excessive care was taken to ensure that she was not exposed to virus, however the deceased was admitted to the hospital late last month and she was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit.
The relative said the woman was swabbed last week and diagnosed with COVID-19 hours before she died.
The relative said that immediate family members were subsequently swabbed and are currently awaiting results.
The last time the island recorded a death was in September last year when a 57-year-old woman of Scarborough who also had pre-existing health conditions died. The island’s first fatality was recorded in April of last year, when a 70- year old male of Moriah with pre-existing health conditions died at the Scarborough General Hospital.
