?Two people were injured yesterday when the controversial Church of the Lighthouse of the Lord Jesus Christ at the Heights of Guanapo, Arima, collapsed.

One suffered injuries to the head and the other on the foot. There has been increased looting at the now abandoned mega-structure. Police were called on the scene and one of the injured was taken to hospital by ambulance. Sources said that looting continued last night after the police left. They said that since the part of the structure was now on the ground, it made it easier for people to take materials away. Trucks and jeeps were seen being loaded with materials last night.

Attorney General Anand Ramlogan said he had no standing to intervene to prevent looting or lawlessness at the incomplete church. Ramlogan was quoted as making that declaration, in a news statement issued yesterday. "The subject premises are private property and the State cannot trespass on same," the statement said.

The AG's release added: "Ordinarily, the owner should make a report to the police about theft to obtain police protection." Ramlogan was quoted as expressing "alarm" about "the lawlessness." But he said he had no control over the police and "could neither instruct nor direct them."

He said the silence of the owner of the property and the Commissioner of Police was "deafening." He said the owner of the facility "remains a mystery." Ramlogan expressed "disappointment" that neither the Police Commissioner nor the Integrity Commission had intervened. He insisted that the Integrity Commission was "specifically empowered in law to seek the assistance of the Police Service."
