It’s a well-known fact that the United National Congress (UNC) has been engaged in discussions with various stakeholders, national interest groups and organisations and it will continue doing so, says party chairman Dave Tancoo.
That was his response when asked if the UNC is in, or open to alliance with the National Transformation Alliance (NTA) and similarly with the Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP).
UNC deputy leader David Lee had referred the queries to Tancoo, who said the party would continue its discussions with groups, stakeholders and other political organisations to unite citizens to “rescue Trinidad and Tobago from the PNM.”
Tancoo didn’t reply to queries that the general election nominations the UNC received were for only 39 constituencies. Last December, the party had stated it was opening nominations for the 41 constituencies.
On Monday, UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said at nomination closure last week, the party had received 200 nominations for 39 seats. She said there are 39 seats in Trinidad. There was no mention of the two Tobago seats.
Tancoo didn’t reply on if no nominations were received from Tobago, or if UNC will seek an alliance with parties opposed to PNM there. Tancoo said he couldn’t provide information on nominations received by UNC’s secretariat. The last line of Tancoo’s comment was “more information will be provided to the national community in due course”.
There was no word either to query on when the UNC’s executive would meet.
