SWMCOL says the fire at the Beetham Landfill site has been extinguished.

The company apologised for all inconvenience caused because of the intermittent smoke earlier today.

“We take this opportunity to thank the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services and SWMCOL’s emergency management

team for their efforts in extinguishing the fire,” the company said in a release.

Fires in the landfill are common and have, in the past, been known to reignite.

Another fire is burning at the Beetham landfill. Those with health conditions are being asked to take precautions because of smoke in the area.

Trinidad and Tobago Solid Waste Management Company Limited (SWMCOL) said in a release Initial investigations revealed that the fire is located at the active tipping area which will result in some delay to the company’s operations today.

Fires in the landfill aren’t uncommon. A major fire in the landfill in April 2022 burned for several days affecting air quality in the capital.
