Police have charged a 24-year-old yam vendor who is accused of beating a Siparia labourer and stuffing him down a 16-foot well.
On Friday, Siparia CID got the go-ahead from the Director of Public Prosecutions’ office to charge the suspect, who was held shortly after Romeo Mitchell was rescued last week Monday.
The suspect was charged with attempted murder and kidnapping by PC Jimdar and is expected to stand before the Siparia Magistrates Court on Monday.
Reports stated that around 10 am last Monday, Mitchell, 55, and the suspect got into a fight along the Mora Dam Road, Siparia.
During the altercation, the suspect threw him into the Penal Well #25 owned by the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and left.
With a broken leg and spinal injuries, Mitchell was unable to climb out and cried for help until residents heard him.
Fire officers responded and were able to hoist Mitchell out of the well. He was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital for emergency treatment.
Investigators were unable to speak to Mitchell for a few days as he was heavily sedated due to the severity of his injuries. His condition improved by the weekend but he remained in a serious condition.
The Penal Well #25 is in the Mora Dam and was commissioned in 2010 to produce 120 gallons of water daily for the surrounding communities.
The Mora Dam is used as a reservoir by PowerGen.
