When will crime be seriously addressed in this country?
How many more innocent lives will be lost?
Have the citizens become numb to crime?
Does anyone care anymore?
A manhunt is now on in Tobago for bandits who shot a gyro vendor in the head on Monday. The rate at which crime is increasing in this country is quite alarming. Murders seem to have become the order of the day.
What is more shocking is the fact that these crimes are being committed in broad daylight without fear of the police, particularly robbery. It is quite baffling that in spite of the increase in crime that the Government doesn’t place more emphasis on increasing security measures.
Crimes against businessmen, women and children have increased manifold during the recent past. This alarming rate of increase in crimes is a serious cause of concern for all right-thinking citizens in the country.
Lack of moral education, violence in movies and television serials, corrupt police behaviour and a desire for quick money or undeserved prosperity in life and lack of proper social development are some of the reasons that lead people to a life of crime.
I must emphasise that the number one role of government is the safety and security of its citizenry. The current administration has failed us. It is time for a new government.
A multi-pronged strategy should be introduced to check crime in society. The public at large and school children, in particular, should receive education and told to respect the sanctity of life and individual liberty.
The police force needs to be educated and trained to handle the situation intelligently and sympathetically, though I am not sure things will improve any time soon because no one really cares about crime until they are directly affected.
