Cleopatra Borel began her 2013 campaign taking the second spot in the women's shot put at the Shot in the City indoor event at the Cloud in Auckland, New Zealand on Saturday.
The national indoor and outdoor record holder was runner up with a distance of 17.13 behind home-favourite Valarie Adams who won with an New Zealand indoor record of 20.75. Another New Zealander Te Rina Keenan was third (15.95).
Adams is the 2008/2012 Olympic and 2009/2011 world champion.
Borel's distance was just 7 cm short of the World Championships 17.20 B standard.
Speaking after the meet, she said though she was not to happy with her distance she is continuing to prepare for this year's World Championships in Moscow, Russia from August 10 to 18.
"Today's meet has me feeling excited to see how things will go as I continue to work on my technique and physical perpetration for World Championships. I know my distance was not outstanding, but I'm happy to have gotten over 17m, and I know I will build from this point," said Borel.
The two time Commonwealth and Pan American Games medallist will be aiming to qualify for her fifth World Championship team. Borel will next compete in Sydney Track Classic in Australia on Saturday.
