Chung, St Louis add mixed doubles gold

T&T's France-based fa­ther and step-daugh­ter pair­ing of Dex­ter St Louis and Rheann Chung won their sev­enth mixed dou­bles ti­tle in tour­na­ment his­to­ry when the 55th Caribbean Re­gion­al Ta­ble-Ten­nis Fed­er­a­tion Cham­pi­onship con­tin­ued at the Beause­jour In­door Sports Are­na, Beause­jour, Gros Islet, St Lu­cia on Thurs­day night.The T&T pair which had to set­tle for bronze last year in Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic made amends by beat­ing Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic's Juan Vi­la and Eva Brit­to 13-11, 13-11, 9-11, 11-2 in the gold medal con­test to re­claim the ti­tle they last won in 2011.In the fi­nal-four match-up, Chung and St Louis al­so tan­gled with an­oth­er Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic pair­ing, in Emil San­tos and Lineth Vi­la and se­cured an 11-9, 6-11, 11-4, 11-5 vic­to­ry while Vi­la and Brit­to oust­ed Mark Dow­ell and Sher­rice Fe­lix in a tense five-set­ter, 12-10, 7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9.

When the com­pe­ti­tion served off Chung who led the T&T women to a fourth team ti­tle in his­to­ry on Wednes­day night (2004, 2008, 2009 and 2013), and St Louis were hand­ed a round-one bye be­fore they thrashed Mar­tinique's Samuel De Lep­ine and Corinne Pharose 11-6, 11-5, 11-6 and Guyana's Ed­in­ho Lewis and Chelsea Edghill 11-7, 11-2, 11-3.T&T's Cur­tis Humphreys and ten-times na­tion­al cham­pi­on Aleena Ed­wards got as far as the last-16 when they pun­ished St Vin­cent and The Grenadines' Damion Dublin and Nastha Short­te 11-4, 11-6, 11-8, but were then beat­en by Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic's Samuel Galvez and Yasiris Or­tiz 11-6, 3-11, 11-8, 2-11, 10-12 for a place in the last-eight.An­oth­er lo­cal en­trant, Arun Roop­nar­ine and Jash­er De Gannes al­so start­ed well, beat­ing St Lu­cians, Adri­an Glace and Char­maine Polius 11-4, 11-5, 11-8, how­ev­er, they then loss to a Guyana pair­ing, 13-11, 8-11, 4-11, 11-13.

In the women's dou­bles, Chung and 11-year-old Caribbean Un­der-13 cham­pi­on Jash­er De Gannes, who was al­so part of the vic­to­ri­ous women's team came up short in the fi­nal, 6-11, 12-14, 7-11 to Guyanese duo, Tre­nace Lowe and Chelsea Edghill.Chung and De Gannes reached the fi­nal via their 10-12, 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 11-7 vic­to­ry over Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic's Yasiris Or­tiz and Kir­cia Di­az while Lowe and Edghill over­came Guade­loupe's Cor­rine Vail­lant and Ma­noelle Ga­mon 11-7, 11-5, 6-11, 11-2.Ear­li­er on Chung and De Gannes re­ceived a bye in the round-of-16 be­fore stop­ping Guyana's Akeisha Nedd and Na­tal­ie Cum­mings 10-12. 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 11-7 in the quar­ter­fi­nals while fel­low T&T pair Aleena Ed­wards and Lin­da Par­tap-Boodan was oust­ed at the first hur­dle, 4-11, 7-11, 11-7, 2-11 by Vail­lant and Ga­mon.

...Men get two dou­bles bronze

The men's dou­bles teams of Alar­ic Humphreys and Arun Roop­nar­ine and St Louis and Cur­tis Humphreys had to set­tle for bronze medals af­ter los­ing to Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic pair­ings in the semi­fi­nals.The younger of the Humphreys', Alar­ic and Roop­nar­ine fell to Juan Vi­la and Emil San­tos 8-11, 9-11, 6-11 while Samuel Galves and Isaac Vi­la ac­count­ed for St Louis and Cur­tis, 6-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-8.Both T&T teams were giv­en round-of-32 byes af­ter which Roop­nar­ine and Alar­ic had a walkover win against French Guiana's Stephane Fi­garo and Chris­t­ian Kanam­ma and then an up­set of Bar­ba­di­ans Kevin Far­ley and Trevor Far­ley, 11-9, 5-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-9 be­fore their semis loss.St Louis and Humphreys made full use of their first round bye by crush­ing St Vin­cent and The Grenadines' Kavir Gaymes and Damion Dublin 11-2, 11-7, 11-6 then Guyana's Joel Al­leyne and Ed­in­ho Lewis 11-5, 11-3, 11-6.Last night the Un­der-21 and vet­er­ans sin­gles tour­na­ment were ex­pect­ed to con­clude while the men and women sin­gles com­pe­ti­tion serve off to­day with Chung go­ing af­ter a sixth ti­tle and St Louis, a fifth.
