Borel captures second CAC gold

Shot put­ter Cleopa­tra Borel made a suc­cess­ful de­fence of her women's ti­tle at the 22nd Cen­tral Amer­i­can and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mex­i­co, yes­ter­day to give T&T its sec­ond gold medal at the Games.

Gold­en in 2010 in Puer­to Ri­co, 35-year-old Borel was nev­er in trou­ble of se­cur­ing the gold medal af­ter her first throw of 17.84 placed her at the top of the field. This was fol­lowed by throws of 18.07, 18.38, 18.53 and 18.99 be­fore foul­ing her fi­nal ef­fort.

She joins swim­mer George Bovell who won a third straight gold in the men's 50m freestyle fi­nal last week.

T&T's oth­er medals to date came via the na­tion­al men's hock­ey team (sil­ver), Bovell (swim­ming), Do­ri­an Alexan­der (taek­won­do), Cur­tis Humphreys/ Dex­ter St Louis (ta­ble ten­nis), Roger Daniel (shoot­ing), Christo­pher George (ju­do), Kwe­si Browne (cy­cling) and box­er Michael Alexan­der.

Sec­ond placed Cuban Ya­ni­u­vis Lopez was al­so con­sis­tent with throws of 17.70, 17.49, 17.65, 17.87 and 17.88 while bronze medal­list San­dra Mile­na Lemos of Colom­bia, had two suc­cess­ful at­tempts, first an ef­fort of 16.98 and 17.50 to earn her medal as she fouled on her next four at­tempts.

In the men's 200m fi­nal, 26-year-old Kyle Greaux was fifth in 20.95, be­hind the quar­tet of Cubans Rober­to Sky­ers (20.47) and Reynier Mena (20.54) and Mex­i­co's Jose Car­los Her­rera (20.63) while Hon­duran Rolan­do Cruz Pala­cios was fourth in 20.76.

In Wednes­day's semi­fi­nals, Greaux was third in 20.83.

T&T's oth­er en­trant Em­manuel Cal­len­der com­plet­ed a dis­as­trous dou­ble af­ter he was dis­qual­i­fied from heat two, to fol­low up fail­ing to reach the men's 100m fi­nal while US-based Mikel Thomas ad­vanced to the men's 110m hur­dles fi­nal card­ed for 12.55 pm to­day, when he third in his semi­fi­nal (14.08), be­hind Cuban Yor­dan Luis Ofar­rill (13.63) and US Vir­gin Is­lands' Ed­die Lovett (13.82).

Ayan­na Alexan­der, a bronze medal­list at this year's Com­mon­wealth Games, was eighth in the long jump with a longest leap of 12.94 me­tres and in the men's 1,500m, Ja­maal James was ninth in 4:00.58 min­utes, well adrift of Cuban Andy Gon­za­lez (3:45.52).
