Shandy Carib Magnolias and Courts Malvern were both made to go the penalty-strokes route in order to capture the T&T Hockey Board Youth Development Committee Under-21 Division women and men Eastern Youth Festival titles at the Hasely Crawford Stadium training field in Mucurapo over the Eastern weekend.
In the women's decider, Magnolias inspired by joint tournament 'Most Goals" scorer Brianna Govia and 'Most Valuable Player", Amie Olton got the better of Paragon 1-0 on penalty-strokes after both teams battled to a 0-0 draw.
This after Magnolias and Paragon both won their semifinals over USA visitors, East Coast Thunder and East Coast Lightning by 1-0 margins.
Magnolias had earlier in the day won its three round-robin matches against Notre Dame (3-0), East Coast Lightning (1-0) and Harvard Checkers (3-0) to top Pool B with maximum nine points, three more than Lightning which won 2-0 over Checkers and 1-0 against the Dames.
In Pool A, Paragon ended as table-toppers with seven points thanks to wins over Malvern (1-0) and Reign (2-0) and a 0-0 draw with East Coast Thunder, which ended second after blanking Reign 3-0 and, also drawing goalless with Malvern.
Like the women, the U-21 men final went to penalty-strokes after a 0-0 deadlock where Malvern got the better of Queen's Park, 3-2 to avenge a round-robin 3-2 round-robin Pool A loss.
In the semifinals, Malvern also advanced on penalties, 2-1 over Fatima following another stalemate while Queen's Park edged Notre Dame 1-0.
Malvern won its other round-robin matches versus Paragon A (3-0), Raiders (2-0) and Petrotrin (3-1) while the Parkites led by the tournament's "MVP" in Jordan Reynos were perfect registering other victories over Raiders (2-0), Paragon A (1-0), and Petrotrin (2-1).
Fatima led by top goalscorer Jordan Vieira (six goals) emerged as Pool B winners with seven points from three matches after slipping past Paragon B and Shape, both by 1-0 margins, and a 2-2 draw with Notre Dame.
The Dames were second with five points, eking out a 1-0 triumph in its meeting with Shape and sharing spoils with Paragon B, 0-0.
