Eleven-time national women's singles champion Aleena Edwards of the University of T&T and Arima Hawks' Linda Partap-Boodhan remained on a collision course to meet in tomorrow's women's Open final in 2016 Silver Bowl Table Tennis Singles Tournament hosted by the T&T Table Tennis Association at the Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Saith Park, Chaguanas.
This after both booked their semifinal places when competition began at the same venue on Sunday.
After playing their their respective three-player round-robin series, Edwards defeated her mother, Verna Edwards of Gladiators 11-5, 11-7, 11-4 in their quarterfinal and faces another former national women's champion, Brittany Joseph who beat youngster Brianna Solomon 11-6, 11-1, 11-2.
Partap-Boodhan eased past Chelsea Fong 11-9, 11-4, 11-4 and will meet veteran Merle Bagoo of Queen's Park, an 11-5, 11-7, 11-4 winner over Jamila Alexander in their quarterfinal.In the two round-of-16 matches, Fong defeated Ambika Sitram 11-9, 11-4, 11-7 and Verna Edwards humbled Arlene Joseph 9-11, 11-1, 11-4, 11-4.
In the men's Open main draw, top ranked local Curtis Humphreys and his WASA Sports Club team-mate Yuvraj Dookram as well as Reeza Burke led the charge into the quarterfinals, but the talking point was former top player Anthony "Sandfly" Brown dispatching of third ranked Arun Roopnarine 4-11, 11-9, 12-10, 10-12, 13-11, after beating his father Bob Roopnarine in the round-of-32 main draw, 11-3, 11-4, 11-6.
Humphreys (C), defeated Aaron Edwards 12-10, 6-11, 11-8, 13-11 in the round-of-32 and then Anson Wellington 11-8, 8-11, 11-8, 11-6 while Mungal rallied past Lawrence Ince 11-9, 11-9, 11-9 and Terry Corbin 5-11, 12-10, 15-13, 11-2; Alaric Humphreys held off Riad Abasali 11-8, 11-2, 11-13, 11-7 and Andrew Alexander 11-3, 11-4, 11-6; Burke crushed Imtiaz Mohammed 11-2, 11-3, 11-3 and battled past Everton Sorzano 5-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-4; Kenneth Parmanand also was stretched by Haadiy Brooker 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 11-4 and Joshua Maxwell, 9-11, 12-10, 12-10, 3-11, 11-7; Darceuil spanked Anthony Laquis 11-8, 11-7, 11-8, and then fought past Kyle Borneo 6-11, 12-10, 12-10, 3-11, 11-7 while Dookram stumped Andrew Edwards 11-6, 11-9, 11-8, and Anson Lowkie 11-1, 15-13, 11-7.
