Imanni Matthew of Kaizen Panthers Jahaziel David (MERC) and Concorde Athletic's Tyrique Vincent, the top three finishers in the boys' Under-17 long jump achieved the qualifying distance for the event for the upcoming Carifta Games at the Trials, on Saturday.
They were among 17 athletes meeting the standards at the Carifta Trials hosted by the National Association of Athletic Administrations of T&T (NAAATT) at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet, Tobago.
Matthew leaped to gold with his best jump measuring 6.92 metres (0.1), going past the 6.37m-standard for the premier track and field event in the region set to take place in Nassau, Bahamas on Easter weekend (April 7-10). David, the silver medallist, went past the qualifying mark on his third attempt with a 6.39m-leap before finishing up with 6.42m (0.5) in the final round. The same as bronze medallist Vincent's fifth attempt, 6.42m (-0.3). It was Vincent's second medal after winning gold in the 110m hurdles with 15.18 ahead of IG Fastlane's Kristian King (15.98) and NWAC's Omari Brown (16.91), respectively.
In the boys' U-20 1,500m, the first two across the line–Cougars's Tafari Waldron (4:06.28) and Omare Thompson of +one A Week (4:08.86)–went under the qualifying time of 4:11.47. Memphis Pioneers' Stefan Camejo finished third with 4:21.18.
The top two medallists in the girls' U-17 version of the race also went under the qualifying time of 5:08.18. They were winner Aniqah Bailey (+one A Week) with 4:57.62 and second-place Oshea Cumming (Zenith) with 5:07.37. Zariah Pascall (D'Abadie) was third with 6:10.51.
The other athletes achieving the standard in their respective events were Chloe James (Kaizen) in the U-17 triple jump (11.16m), Peyton Winter (BURN) in the U-17 shot put (12.15m) with 13.32m, sprinter Alexxe Henry (Zenith) in the U-17 100m (12.04) 11.77, Janae De Gannes (Concorde) in the U-20 long jump (5.55m) 5.76m Jinell Campbell (Mason Hall) in the U-20 shot put with 12.30m, Kernes Shelbourne (Oasics) in the U-20 triple jump with 12.42m, in the U-20 javelin (37.69m), Kenika Cassar (Toco Tafac) with 40.30m and the U-20 1,500m (5:02.23), Kayleigh Forde (+one A Week) with 4:57.91 among the girls.
Tenique Vincent cleared bar at 1.61 metres in the Girls Under-17 Hep High jump contest to better the Carifta standard set at 1.57 metres.
For the boys, Jeron James (MERC) in the U-20 discus with 48.64m and Cyril Sumner (Memphis) in the U-20 400m with 48.32.
