Campbell-Smith wins again for spot in Costa Rican main draw

Em-Miryam Camp­bell-Smith con­firmed her en­try in­to the main draw of the San Jose Bowl Ten­nis Tour­na­ment in Cos­ta Ri­ca yes­ter­day with a more-than-con­vinc­ing 4-0, 4-0 vic­to­ry over Sofia Acu­ra in group IV of the qual­i­fiers.

The re­sult means Camp­bell-Smith, who en­tered the round-robin play-off as the sec­ond-ranked play­er from the Cen­tral Amer­i­can and Caribbean re­gion (COTECC), will now en­ter the main draw as the top play­er from the group.

Yes­ter­day, Min­is­ter of Sports and Com­mu­ni­ty De­vel­op­ment Sham­fa Cud­joe praised the tal­ent­ed Camp­bell-Smith for fly­ing the red, white and black of T&T at its high­est.

"Em-Miryam Camp­bell-Smith has done us all proud. We are hap­py for you, and we ap­pre­ci­ate how you have car­ried the colours of our na­tion's flag with ho­n­our. Be­ing the lone rep­re­sen­ta­tive from T&T at this com­pe­ti­tion makes you an en­cour­age­ment to the oth­er young ath­letes and sports en­thu­si­asts in the coun­try," Cud­joe said in a re­lease.

Camp­bell-Smith leads a pack of five of the re­gion's top 20 girls aged 14 and un­der.

On­ly the day be­fore, Camp­bell-Smith, an equal­ly tal­ent­ed play­er in foot­ball, de­feat­ed the Cos­ta Ri­can No 1 play­er Sofia Bolanos in straight sets, 4-2, 4-1, in her open­ing match of the group stage on Sat­ur­day.
