Central dethroned South to take the FLOW Secondary Schools Girls Hard Ball title at the Brian Lara Academy last evening.
South the defending champions lost the game by four wickets, due to excellent batting from the player of the match Shalini Sawh and vice-captain April Ramoutar.
Chasing 111 to win, Central looked on course at 89 for one before a late South fightback. However, despite the best efforts of pacer Djanaba Joseph (2/19), Central still won.
Earlier, in the day, South defeated Tobago by 19 runs to book their place in the finals, while Central whipped North by 111 runs. The star of the show for Central was Shinelle Sawh who top scored in the finals with 38 to lead her team past the South score of 110. She continued her good form as she got 51 in the semi-final win over North.
South never got going and in the end, they tallied an under-par score of 110 for nine off their allotted 20 overs. Shalini Samaroo was the best batter for them getting 32, while towards the end Queen E Mohammed scored 14 not out. Hema Mahabir with 2/17 and Kiara Reuben 2/21 kept them in check.
Chasing 111 to win the match and take the title, Central got the perfect start through Sawh. She forged an excellent partnership with April Ramoutar. However, when she exited for 38, South came back strongly.
It went down to the wire with Central needing 17 runs from three overs. Djanaba Joseph then made a double strike in an excellent 18th over. The equation read nine needed off the final two and Geneilia Juppy grabbed a crucial scalp in the 19th over to reduce Central to 104 for six. With seven runs needed off 11 balls, Ramoutar showed her class by taking her team home with five balls to spare.
