Dropped West Indies women’s cricketer Britney Cooper says she is prepared to make a strong comeback to the regional team. Cooper spoke to Guardian Media Sports yesterday afternoon as she trained by herself at the National Cricket Centre in Couva.
Cooper has been in and out of the West Indies women’s team, missing out on the South Africa series last year but then gaining a spot on the team for the Women’s World T20 in November. Last week, she was once again dropped by the Cricket West Indies (CWI) selectors from a 20-member training squad preparing for the upcoming Pakistan series.
However, Cooper remains motivated to take back her spot on the team.
“My goal was always to be on the West Indies team and stay on the West Indies team,” she said. “As an athlete you have highs and you have lows. Right now in my career, I’m going through a low point but I still have goals I intend to reach, and as you can see, I’m here along training by myself because I’m motivated to achieve those goals.”
Cooper admitted it’s a bad start to her cricket season but she’s hoping to bounce back and end it much better. Her comeback quest will start in the domestic women’s cricket season which bowls off this weekend.
She said, “I’m going to get a lot of game practice with the club cricket going on and national training is also going on. My team was victorious in the T10 competition this past weekend and now we’re looking towards the 50-over and T20 competitions that is coming.”
Cooper largely struggled at the Women’s World T20 gathering only 23 runs in five innings during the tournament. Instead, the CWI selectors gave a call-up to 21-year-old Jamaican Rashada Williams, who is entering the international set-up for the first time.
