Close to 100 enthusiastic young cricketers on Sunday graduated from the Preysal Cricket School, now sponsored by Digicel. Over the past 11 weeks 93 boys and girls between the ages of seven and 15 were taught the basics of the game, by several of the country's best youth coaches, headed by the club's long-standing development team of Winston Sobers, Debideen Manick and Boya Sahadeo.
The children were this year given the additional treat of having a full day of training at the Queen's Park Oval, both indoor and outdoor, and also enjoyed a tour of the new museum at the historic Test venue.
Emphasis was also placed on keeping a journal, with a special award in this category, given to Rais Baksh, aged seven, one of the youngest graduates.
Dudnath Ramkeesoon, first vice-president of the T&T Cricket Board showered praises on the club, insisting the Preysal model should be adopted by all clubs. He reminded the gathering that the club, because of it's emphasis on youth development, can now boast of having every single national youth captain from Preysal, an achievement not matched by any club anywhere in the region. This year also marked the first of a three-year Digicel sponsorship of the club's cricket school.
