Barbados are likely to face the wrath of Shiv Chanderpaul after the West Indies batsman declared himself available for selection for Guyana's fifth round, WICB regional first class championship match here this weekend. Chanderpaul has not played a single match in the tournament after failing to recover from a finger injury he sustained on the Test tour of Australia late last year, and which also kept him out of the ongoing one-day tour there.
He will be a welcome return to the Guyana side which has struggled in the competition so far and are bottom of the tables on seven points after losing two games and drawing one. "At the moment, I can grip my bat having had a few sessions in the nets and consultations with my doctor and there were no signs of pain," the Guyana Chronicle quoted Chanderpaul as saying. "I had some concerns with fielding but thank God, I am OK in that area and once selected, willing to represent Guyana in the remainder of the tournament."
The left-handed Chanderpaul returned from his home in Florida last Wednesday and CMC Sports understands that he trained with the Guyana squad in Berbice yesterday, as they prepared for the weekend clash against their archrivals at Albion. A final 13-man squad is expected to be named tomorrow and Chanderpaul is expected to feature in the side. He is Guyana's most experienced batsman, having amassed 8669 runs from 123 Tests at an average of nearly 49. Guyana is also missing their other experienced Test batsman in Ramnaresh Sarwan who has been sidelined with injury. (CMC)
