West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) director Baldath Mahabir has described the West Indies performance against Zimbabwe as pathetic. West Indies cricket hit a new low on Sunday when they were beaten in a T20 game by 26 runs by minnows Zimbabwe at the Queen's Park Oval. Zimbabwe made 105 and West Indies reached 79 for seven when their overs ran out. Mahabir said that display lacked discipline and professionalism. "I think the players fell into a comfort zone and reaped the rewards of complacency. "Having received that beating, I think the players would definitely performed better in the one day international series."
First vice-president of the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB), Dudnath Ramkeesoon, said the players have the potential to do well but focus was their problem. "The players have the potential to be successful. However, that ability did not translate into performance. In order to ensure success, one has to focus and this did not happen." Ramkessoon added the players needed to think when they go out to bat. "They need to think and assess the situation. They exhibited very poor shot selection and this led to their downfall." Second vice-president of the TTCB, Lalman Kowlessar said the players played without backbone and their repeated poor performances was really getting to their fans. "I don't think the fans can take on West Indies anymore. The Oval match was poorly attended and it was not because of Carnival or the Beyonce Concert.
If West Indies were playing good cricket, the people would have filled up the ground." Former Test batsman Bryan Davis blamed the approach by the batsman to achieving the target. "The batting approach was very poor. When you are chasing a score of around 100, you have to bat like it is 200. I thought the players relaxed too much and this is why they fell short. All they needed to do was bat properly. Batting is batting regardless of whether you are in a T20 or Test match. "The batting was careless and the funny thing is that if they were chasing around 150, I think they would have batted a lot better." The West Indies team left Trinidad yesterday for Guyana, where they open the five-match limited overs series against the Zimbabweans on Thursday.
