Retired West Indies batting superstar Brian Lara will not turn out for English county Surrey this season, the Daily Telegraph reported has reported. The south London club had been trying to lure the 41-year-old former West Indies captain to play in the Friends Provident Twenty/20 campaign and carry out an ambassadorial community role.
But the Telegraph reported yesterday that talks with Lara had fallen through and the county would no longer be pursuing his services. "We had discussions with Brian Lara but unfortunately we have not been able to come to an agreement, therefore we will not be engaging him," Surrey's managing director of cricket Gus Mackay was quoted as saying.
Only last weekend, Lara said he was keeping his options open about any possible return to competitive cricket. He said he had made no concrete plans but had been practising and playing cricket again to remain fit. (CMC)
