West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul topscored for Lancashire again on the first day of their County Championship Division One match against Somerset at Taunton yesterday. The Guyanese left hander, whose 51 helped his side to a three-wicket win over Hampshire last week, made 56 out of Lancashire's first innings total of 259 all out. Chanderpaul came to the crease with the score on 32 for two and departed at 153 for five when he top-edged a reverse sweep off Murali Kartik to Marcus Trescothick at slip.
He hit eight fours off 78 balls in 119 minutes. The next highest score was 34 by tailender Gary Keedy. Chanderpaul carried his season tally to 678 runs in seven matches at 61.63, the fourth highest average in Division One behind Nottinghamshire's Hashim Amla (75.40) and David Hussey (66.50) and Somerset's James Hildreth (65.45).
In reply, Somerset reached 54 for one. In other matches, former West Indies fast bowlers Corey Collymore and Pedro Collins had a quiet time for Sussex and Middlesex, respectively.
Collymore took one for 39 in 12 overs as Northamptonshire crumbled to 125 all out. His sole wicket was opener Mal Loye in his third over of the morning. Sussex reached 236 for two in 48 overs by stumps. Collins had figures of one for 50 in 14 overs as Worcestershire reached 313 all out. The Bajan pacer accounted for middle order batsman James Cameron.
