Nevis-born batsman Runako Morton captured the prestigious Queen's Park Cricket Club Cricketer of the Year award, at the club's prize-giving ceremony on Thursday night at the Queen's Park Oval. Morton scored five centuries during the season and this swayed the adjudicators in his direction. He beat out national players Amit Jaggernauth, Nicholas Alexis, Kevon Cooper and Sunil Narine for the top award. Morton scored three centuries in the Sunday League at an average off 78.50 and two centuries in the two-day league at an average off 40.44. Jaggernauth captured 28 wickets at an average of 15.39 in the league. Fellow spinner Narine grabbed 29 wickets at 15.48. Allrounder Cooper averaged 33.63 with one century in the league, while be captured 30 wickets at 12.17. Alexis, who was also voted Youth Cricketer of the Year, topped the batting in the league with an average of 62.45.
National youth player Akeal Hosein was named Youth Personality of the Year for his general deportment. West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) director Baldath Mahabir praised the leadershipof the club for being dynamic. "In order for Queen's Park to remain relevant the leadership must be visionary and dynamic and I must say the leaders have shown that they are capable of this. "We are proud of the achievements of Queen's Park Cricket Club and we are happy to celebrate with you all tonight. Cricket is in good health and growing and once we keep being innovative we will continue to prosper.
"I know that the results from the West Indies Cricket team have not been good but if you look closely, there is sure to be a silver lining and maybe that is the start of the Sagicor Academy, or the resumption of 'A' team tours or even the performance of our women cricketers."
Also speaking at the gala function was actor Glenn Davis, the brother of cricket manager at the Oval, Bryan Davis. In his very lively delivery he urged the young players to use being a member of Queen's Park to their advantage. "Be it sport, business or entertainment, use the club to advance, use it, use it , use it." He also said that the proud Queen's Park Cricket Club tradition must continue and every member must do his part to make his club a better one.
