T&T Defence Force men and Queen’s Park Cricket Club veterans (over-40) retained their divisional titles when the 20th edition of the Ventures Hockey Club International Invitational Indoor Hockey Tournament concluded at the Woodbrook Youth Facility, Woodbrook, on Sunday.
In an evenly matched men’s Open final, Defence Force got a lone goal from Caleb Guiseppi in the 21st minute to secure a 1-0 triumph over Guyana’s Saints.
The win for the Army/Coast Guard combination avenged a 4-1 loss in their final round-robin match on Saturday.
The Veterans (Over-40) decider was a closely fought encounter as well, with Police and Queen’s Park Cricket Club locked at 2-2 at the end of the 30-minute contest.
After a goalless first half, the Lawmen went ahead through Nicholas Wren in the 21st minute, but the Parkites hit back with a brace from Nicholas Camacho in the 23rd and 25th minutes to take a 2-1 lead, only for Wayne Legerton to draw Police level in the 27th to send the match into the penalty-strokes shootout.
In the shoot-out, Ryan Cowie and Rob Wyatt converted their attempts for the Parkites to seal a 2-0 triumph to keep hold of their title.
However, in the Women’s Open, a new champion was crowned after Paragon dethroned Magnoplias.
3-2 led by a second-half double from Krizia Layne.
Krizia Layne got her goals in the 17th and 20th minutes to put her team 3-0 ahead after Felicia Ashby had converted a ninth-minute penalty stroke.
The De Freitas sisters, Shaniah (23rd) and Savannah (27th), tried their best to mount a comeback for Magnolias, but the Paragon defence, marshalled by captain Alana Lewis and Avion Barclay, held firm to earn the win and with it the women’s title.
