Woodbrook-based Ma Pau created the biggest upset so far in the First Citizens Cup when it sent six-time winner and five-time defending champion, W Connection packing at the quarterfinal hurdle on Friday night. The "Casino Boys" handed W Connection a 31 whipping in the second match of a double-header at Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella, to set up a semifinal meeting with Joe Public on Friday. In the other semifinal on Friday, Defence Force and Clico San Juan Jabloteh, the only other clubs to win the cup, will do battle. Both matches will be played at Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya, with the final set for October 2 at the same venue. Ma Pau went ahead in the 16th minute when St Vincent and the Grenadines midfielder, Shandel Samuel beat Colombian goakeeper Miguel Lloyd for a 10 lead.
Six minutes into the second half, Hector curled in a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area to level the match at 11. Rennie Britto regained the lead for Ma Pau in the 72nd minute while Anthony Wolfe sealed the win with a 90th minute penalty, after Samuel was brought down in the area. In the first match at Marabella, 2003 winner, Jabloteh got a goal on either side of the half from Jason Marcano, in the 45th and 60th minute, to beat United Petrotrin 21. Brazilian Luis Lima netted a last minute consolation for Petrotrin. Joe Public got a hat-trick from Kerry Baptiste and a brace from fellow national player Hayden Tinto to turn back St Ann's Rangers 51 in Macoya. Baptiste scored in the 16th, 32nd and 85th while Tinto netted in the tenth and 60th, the last of which was a gem of a volley off a right sided cross from Micah Lewis. Stephan Morris pulled a goal back for Rangers in the 25th minute to trail 21.
The second match at Macoya was a much closer affair, as Carter inspired the "Teteron Boys" from a 20 half-time deficit for a 32 win over Caledonia AIA. Keyon Edwards tapped in from close range in the seventh minute for Caledonia to lead 10 and in the 19th minute, Edwards slammed home a penalty for a 20 advantage. In the second half, Defence Force turned things around. First, Carter guided in a right cross from Kerry Joseph past goalkeeper Dwayne Sandy in the 53rd minute and seven minutes later, Jorsling scored from the penalty spot. Caledonia had a chance to reclaim the lead in the 64th minute but Daniel blasted a penalty against the crossbar.
