Anthony Wolfe, one of two surviving members from the 2006 World Cup squad, is expected to be on the starting team today as T&T's Soca Warriors meet Cuba in their opening Digicel Caribbean Cup encounter at the Pierre Aliker Stadium in Dillon from 6 pm. After a lengthy lay off, Wolfe returned to the team for the previous three matches of the Digicel Cup and although he is among players currently locked in a court battle over finances with the Football Federation, he is putting country first and is ready to help the team capture the regional title. "I think we are well prepared," Wolfe said on the eve of the match. "The team has shown that with hard work, anything is possible. "The coach has been working tirelessly with us to ensure we get up to a certain level that will see us come through this tournament with victory.
"A lot has been said about whether we have the players to take our football back to the top and I would like to say I'm honoured to be playing again. I have some experience from the 2006 campaign and I have been working hard to regain my place and this is my chance to play a big role in seeing the team become one of the best in Concacaf," Wolfe added. Head coach Russell Latapy has opted for speedy MLS-based striker Cornell Glen instead of W Connection midfielder Silvio Spann who has not played a full international or Pro League match in some months. Latapy said: "Once Cornell was declared fit and available, it was a decision based on that." Looking ahead to the clash, Latapy noted both teams will be coming out strong.
"No team wants to come up short in the opening match. We have our sights set on the Cup and I would like to believe that once we produce the football we are capable of doing, there's no reason why the results shouldn't come our way." Defenders Daniel Cyrus and Kern Cupid were recovering from a couple knocks but are available for selection. T&T defeated Cuba 3-1 and 3-0 in their 2010 World Cup qualifiers. The other players in the current side who were involved then include Keon Daniel who scored three goals over the two meetings, as well as captain Clyde Leon, Densill Theobald, Wolfe and Glen who also scored in the away 3-1 victory back in 2008. Hosts Martinique will face Grenada in the second game of the double header from 8.30 pm.
