An early morning fire yesterday destroyed a significant portion of the prisons laundry room at the Maximum Security Prison, in Arouca.
Damage is estimated to be in the millions. The blaze began shortly after 4 am. Up to late yesterday, fire officers could not confirm the cause of the fire.
The blaze spread quickly as the area is used to store prisoners' and prisons officers' clothing and bed sheets. No one was injured and fire officers were able to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the other buildings.
