La Cura Sportswomen and Central Warriors men lifted the open Division titles when the T&T Volleyball Federation hosted its
Let’s Play Volleyball”, the second such event for the year, at Skinner Park, San Fernando on Sunday, the first of such for volleyball in the city. In the women’s decider, La Cura Sports defeated Big South East Port-of-Spain 21-13, 21-15 while Troopers came third.
The men’s final was a closer contest with Central Worriers outlasting La Cura Sports, 20-21, 21-20, 15-12.
In the two other finals contested, among the juniors, Pleasantville Senior Secondary defeated Chaguanas North Secondary 21-7, 21- 14 while J-MVP Coaching School claimed third in the boys while in the girls' Pleasantville Senior Secondary defeated Troopers Volleyball Club in a ‘Golden Set’ 25:17.
Chaguanas North Secondary came 3rd, followed by J-MVP Coaching School and Chaguanas North Secondary II.
The event attracted five women and 3 men teams in the junior competition, and three women and 2 men teams in the open category. The tournament was structured following the park volley model on a smaller court (8 x 16 metres) and four players per team.
From the San Fernando City Council representing the Mayor (who was out of the country) was Patricia Victor-Wilson – councillor for Mon Repos/Navet, the Chairman of the Sports Committee in the council.
In her address, Victor-Wilson identified the benefits of such an event to the development of all the positive values associated with a team sport. She recognized the effort made by the teams travelling south of the Caroni River and welcomed them to San Fernando, highlighting that accepting these opportunities will develop their skills as players in this internationally acclaimed sport and together with dedication and commitment will ensure that they become great athletes to represent their communities and our Nation.
The day also had a health fair where the participants, athletes, coaches and officials had the opportunity to interact with athletic trainer Brenton Bain and Sports Nutritionist Gina Ragbir both of the University of T&T (UTT) and a team of medical doctors from San Fernando.
A proud moment of the day was when two European-based senior national players, Germany-based Channon Thompson and Turkey-based Krystel Esdelle graced the competition with their presence and were able to create a lot of excitement giving out autographed tee shirts and volleyballs to the Crowd.
