Double Olympic silver medallist, Richard Thompson and female sprinter Monique Cabral are listed in a stable condition after suffering minor injuries in a vehicle accident early Thursday morning in Port-of-Spain. The duo, who both attended Louisiana State University on four-year scholarships, were returning from a New Year’s celebration, when the Nissan Cefiro in which they were travelling was involved in a collision with a Toyota Rav4 around 4.30 am at the corner of Marli and Picton Streets, Newtown.
Thompson, who was driving at the time, received cuts to his face and forehead, while Cabral, who was seated in the front passengers seat, is said to have received cuts to her hands and lower back with slightly bruised ribs.
Early reports yesterday stated that the sprinters were seriously injured in the accident, however, all scans and tests completed on the pair up till late yesterday have shown no indication that the injuries received are threatening in anyway to their athletic careers. Thompson, aged 23, finished second to world record breaker Jamaican Usain Bolt in the Beijing Olympics 100 metres and was the anchor of T&T’s silver medal winning 4x100 metres relay team.
