Champion jockey, Ricky Jadoo is set to repeat last year's success in the Jockey's Championship with only one day remaining. Champion trainer, Glenn Mendez has already won the trainer's championship in the win category, with his fifty-eight (53) successes, while John O'Brien has already won the trainer championship for prize money, having an unassailable lead. Jadoo, who rode one winner, Silver Surfer, last Saturday, pushed his tally to 27 wins, two ahead of apprentice Nicholas Patrick, who rode one winner on the seven race card, as the penultimate day of racing for the 2009 season ended.
Full fledged rider Richard Perez, who rides for trainer Derick Mosca needs to win three races on Gold Cup day and from my vantage point that is impossible. However, Patrick is certain to be named apprentice champion, as he holds a three win lead on Ronald Ali, who has 22 wins with only the bumper ten race Boxing Day card left. The final day of the season–Boxing Day is always a day for the big trainers, big jockeys and with Patrick Husbands being brought in to partner Blackstone Street in the Gold Cup, he will not leave empty handed.
Tomorrow, champion trainers, Glenn Mendez and arch rival, John O'Brien who usually win six of the ten events can repeat the job. From my count the final day of the 2009 season will be no different, with champion owner Allan Madoo getting in on the action, maybe once. The only question which will need to be answered on Boxing Day is, who is the best stayer in the South Caribbean and the answer will be either Bruceontheloose or Blackstone Street. My selection for the Gold Cup is Bruceontheloose, which has been given an easy time by trainer O'Brien over the past month but with the Gold Cup in sight, I expect a command performance tomorrow. Don't miss it!
