I ex­pect John O'Brien-trained three-year-old colt Bruceon­th­eloose to write his name in­to the an­nals of rac­ing his­to­ry to­day, by be­com­ing the first West In­di­an Bred three-year-old to win the pres­ti­gious Gold Cup at the cen­tralised venue at San­ta Rosa Park, Ari­ma. The ea­ger­ly an­tic­i­pat­ed clash be­tween the top equine stars, Bruceon­th­eloose and Black­stone Street will ma­te­ri­alise to­day, in the fea­ture Grade One race–First Cit­i­zens Gold Cup over 2,000 me­tres on the main track at 4.25 pm. Bruceon­th­eloose is my nap se­lec­tion to win the blue-rib­bon event to­day with Calder-based jock­ey Wilmer Galviz in the sad­dle. To­day's rac­ing will see the Ari­ma Race Club (ARC) and ten com­pa­nies pump some $800,000 in­to the ten-race pro­gramme.

This year, the Gold Cup purse is the largest in the his­to­ry of the event, a whop­ping $500,000. The horse to beat is the new rac­ing sen­sa­tion, Bruceon­th­eloose, fond­ly known as "Us­ain Bolt." Bruceon­th­eloose ar­rived in Trinidad in Ju­ly af­ter hav­ing vir­tu­al­ly an­ni­hi­lat­ed the op­po­si­tion in two legs of the Ja­maica Triple Crown, and fail­ing by the short­est of short heads in the Ja­maica Der­by. Bruceon­th­eloose ex­act­ed his re­venge on his Der­by vic­tor by a mar­gin of 13 lengths in his fi­nal out­ing be­fore com­ing to Trinidad. To date, Bruceon­th­eloose has won his five races on the lo­cal track by a com­bined dis­tance of some 45 lengths. These vic­to­ries in­clude the two legs of the Triple Crown, the Mid-Sum­mer Clas­sic and the Trinidad Der­by, and the Caribbean Cham­pi­on Stakes.

The times which Bruceon­th­eloose have record­ed are com­pa­ra­ble to the best thor­ough­bred seen at the cen­tralised venue and I be­lieve the record of Sug­ar Mike could be bro­ken. There is on­ly one horse which stands in the path of Bruceon­th­eloose, his­to­ry, the $300,000 first prize cheque and the "Horse of the Year" ti­tle, and that is Black­stone Street, which is con­di­tioned by cham­pi­on train­er Glenn Mendez. Black­stone Street has been pro­gres­sive all sea­son hav­ing won the Pres­i­dent's Cup, the Di­a­mond Stakes and the Stew­ards Cup.

In the Stew­ards Cup over 1200 me­tres, Black­stone Street showed his true re­silience and a quick turn of foot to catch and beat Sweet Alex and this au­gurs well for his chance over the longer trip. With Patrick Hus­band in the sad­dle on Black­stone Street, Bruceon­th­eloose will know that he is in a race and it will be no walk in the park. Of the oth­er run­ners, Cac­tus Amour could out­run sta­ble­mate Hon­est Hero and last year hero Chief Com­man­der for third place. Cre­ole Chief Com­man­der does not know how to run a bad race and to­day will be no dif­fer­ent. The big day is here and all roads lead to San­ta Rosa Park, Ari­ma, to wit­ness this mem­o­rable and his­to­ry-mak­ing event. Post time for the first event to­day is at 11.00 am.
