Decorated T&T swim star George Bovell III won bronze in the 50-metre freestyle at the 26th Annual Charlotte UltraSwim which was held from May 13-16, 2010 at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bovell was among six T&T swimmers that participated in this Grand Prix Meet. Bovell, swimming for Auburn Aquatics, touched the wall in 22.61 behind Olympians Josh Schneider (22.38) and Cullen Jones (22.40). Joshua Mc Leod (24.12) of Atlantis Aquatics and Caryle Blondell (24.14) of Blue Dolphins qualified for the C final and placed seventh and eighth respectively. Bovell then went on to finish seventh in the 100m freestyle A final in 50.76. Mc Leod qualified for the C final in the event in a personal best 52.27, ahead of the likes of Jones. Mc Leod placed seventh in the C final in 52.96. Blondell placed 42nd in the preliminaries in 53.17.
Blondell also participated in the 100m backstroke (54th - 1:02.31). Mc Leod placed 30th in the 100m butterfly in 57.29. Cherelle Thompson of Blue Dolphins missed out on qualifying in the C final of the women's 50 free. She was joint 24th place in a time of 27.19. In a swim-off between Thompson and Paige Whitmire, Whitmire won in 26.46, while Thompson swam 26.94. Thompson was also 98th in the 100 free in 1:02.70, and 52nd in the 100 breast in 1:27.18. Kimberlee John Williams of Blue Dolphins placed 75th in the 100 free in 1:00.61, 82nd in the 200 free in 2:10.37 and 43rd in the 100 back in 1:06.91. Mc Leod's younger brother Abraham, touched the wall in 1:10.38 in the 100 breast to place 46th, and in 2:38.57 in the 200 breast to place 55th.
This meet was used to expose T&T's top age-group swimmers to open competition. With the exception of Abraham Mc Leod, these swimmers were all beneficiaries of Government's Elite Athlete Assistance Programme. Bovell, John Williams and Thompson have already qualified for individual events at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games. John Williams will also be attending the inaugural Youth Olympics in August in Singapore. Bovell has also qualified for Commonwealth. Blondell, and the two Mc Leods are attempting to qualify for individual events for CAC Games.
