National women's shot putter Cleopatra Borel-Brown won her pet event in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Borel-Browne topped the field at the Grand Premio de Atletismo meet yesterday with a throw of 18.05 metres. Her winning throw is her best so far for the year. In second place was Natalis Duco of Chile who was second with 17.64 metres. The win is the first for Borel-Browne in 2010. The 2006 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist was second in Dakar in Senegal in March.
She was due to participate in the Diamond League meet in Shanghai, China but did not make the trip. Rhonda Watkins was fourth in the women's with 6.54 metres. The 2006 world junior and 2007 NCAA indoor and outdoor champion jumped the same distance as third-placed Jovanee Jarrett of Jamaica but the Jamaican finished ahead of the T&T athlete with a better second best jump. Reigning Olympic champion Keita Costa of Brazil won with 6.68 metres.
Double Olympic silver medalist Richard Thompson was also fourth in the men's 100 sprint. Running in the first of two races, Thompson crossed the line in 10.12 seconds, a season's best. Emmanuel Callender was 8th in 10.23. Marc Burnes was third in the second race in a modest time of 10.43 seconds. Michael Rodgers of the US won the first race in 10.06 seconds with Dwain Chambers of Great Britain in second. The 2010 world indoor 60 metre champion clocked 10.11, the same time as third place Lerone Clarke of Jamaica.
