Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs and part-time swim coach Anil Roberts says he expects good results from Olympic medallist George Bovell III at the tenth Fina World Swimming Championships. The 27-year-old Bovell and fellow swimmers Cherelle Thompson, and Joshua Mc Leod left here on Thursday night for the United Arab Emirates, Dubai to compete in the Championship which runs from December 15 to 19 at the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex. Team coach, Joseph Mc Leod also departed with the team on Thursday while Roberts and team manager, Gary Morales leave for Dubai tomorrow.
The T&T Sports Minister said he was privileged to have been invited by FINA to conduct meetings with their executive and at the same time will be assisting Bovell. Speaking on the eve of his departure, Roberts said, "Both Bovell and Mc Leod had a great preparation meet at the Canadian Open and he expects them to do well. "George won three gold medals and broke two records while Mc Leod had records in the 50 metres butterfly and 100 metres butterfly and did some incredible times and we are hoping they can maintain that.
"As for George he swam brilliantly and improved as the meet went on and now that he has been rested he will perform even better I believe. Looking ahead to Dubai, Roberts said Bovell is now in fully tapered mood and ready. However, he noted there were a few things still to trash out which they hope to get done before races begin in Dubai. Roberts, a Level Five senior swimming coach also pointed to a tough schedule for George, one they may have to do some adjustments too.
