The T&T Boxing Association (TTBA) will honour all its boxers and officials who have performed and achieved at the highest levels of the sport, when the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) celebrates International Boxing Day on Friday (August 27).
Cecil Forde, president of the TTBA, said as his association is a member of AIBA, they will be joining the celebrations, and boxers who have performed at the Olympic Games such as Don Smith (1984 Los Angeles, USA), Nimral Lorick (1984 Los Angeles), Kirt Sinnette (1996 Atlanta), Carlos Suarez (2012 London), Nigel Paul (2016 Brazil) and Aaron Prince (2020 Tokyo, Japan) will be honoured.
They will join the boxers who did well at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games, the Commonwealth Games, the Pan American Games as well as other coaches, referees and judges.
Former boxer Ria Ramnarine, the WIBA minimumweight title-holder from 2005 to 200 and holder of the WIBF minimumweight and WIBA light flyweight titles in 2011, will also be honoured.
Forde said the TTBA is eagerly awaiting the opening of all gyms, as they intend to conduct registering and do site visits to ensure that everyone and everything is in place as they focus on the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
"Most of our youth boxers will be making the transition to the senior level and from December, hopefully with the hosting of the Caribbean Championships, serious competitions will begin.
"Tobago has been very quiet, we will be changing that soon. Our first initiative would be the hosting of a national Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching Course. All gyms must have a level 2 coach as head coach in moving forward. The local boxing boss is urging the members of all the gyms and other boxing officials to get vaccinated as they move forward."
