T&T's Olympic boxer Aaron Prince will attempt to rebound from the disappointment of the Tokyo, Japan Olympics on Tuesday, when he takes on Soma Mester of Hungary in a middleweight contest at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.
The bout comes a day after his compatriot Anthony Joseph received a walk-over win on Sunday against Niven Chemben of Mauritius (MRI) in the Featherweight division. The format for the contest is loose and out.
Yesterday boxing coach Reynold Cox said he is confident that Prince should be able to handle his opponent after the disappointment of not doing as well as he expected to at the Olympics. "He should be ready, both physically and mentally.
I had the opportunity to see his opponent fight, so we're going to employ a strategy to receive a win. He is a strong fighter, but he opens up a lot. So we're hoping to work on the counterattack," Cox told Guardian Media Sports yesterday.
He added: "Based on the fight he had at the Olympics, I think this is an easier fight, so he should be able to handle it. "
Prince made his debut at the Tokyo Olympics this year in July/August but lost to Andrej Csemez of Slovakia in his first bout. He has since vowed to do better in coming tournaments, all in a lead-up to the Olympic Games in France 2024.
Yesterday Prince told Guardian Media he was expecting to win the fight at the Olympics but when he looked back at video clippings of the fight, he did not score as much as he should have in the first round, so he intends to fix that this time around. He noted his goal for the world championships is to progress as far as he could.
Meanwhile, Nigel Paul, the 2016 Olympic qualifier, will spring into action on Thursday against Nelson Hysa of Albania, and like Prince, Cox believes it should be a contest that the big Super Heavyweight fighter should be able to handle.
"He will be hoping to rebound from the disappointment of now making it to the Olympics Games this year, as he just missed out on it," Cox explained. Apart from the three fighters, T&T will also be represented by Donnell Phillips, going up against Tunga Oyumbaatar of Mongolia tomorrow (Wednesday) in a 60kg contest and Blessing Waldrop, having a date with Vershaun Lee of the USA on Saturday.
