Faith Ramnath, T&T's upcoming female boxing sensation, will begin her campaign for precious metal at the International Boxing Association (IBA) Women's World Boxing Championships in Instanbul, Turkey Tuesday at the Başakşehir Gençlik ve Spor Tesisleri.
Ramnath will take on Australia's Madeleine Bowen in a Women's Minimumweight contest (45-48kg), needing to win to progress. She is one of only two T&T boxers at the championships, the other being Tianna Guy, another potential fighter who will enter the ring Wednesday against Sitora Turdibekova of Uzbekistan.
The T&T fighters have been training religiously at an arranged camp, courtesy of the T&T Boxing Association, but with little to no international fights available, coach/manager Reynold Cox is hoping for much-needed experience ahead of the Commonwealth Games from July 28 to August 8 in Birmingham, England, as well as the Olympic Games which will take place in Paris, France in 2024.
"I am not looking for any gold medal or anything like that. I just want to see my fighters being competitive on the international stage. For me, that will be enough to take back home.
"We have been in training for a long time now but we have hardly been to any international competition. So basically, they are still novice fighters because neither of them has 20 fights to their name as yet. In fact, between them, they have less than 30 fights, so if they can gain some experience at these championships it will be good," Cox told Guardian Media Sports on Monday.
Both fighters had short stints at the recent Americas Boxing Confederation Championship in Guayaquil, Ecuador which took place from March 22 to April 2, where both were beaten early in the tournament.
Cox believes the women boxers will also have an added opportunity for development as he, as coach, will also get the chance to work with other boxing teams while in Turkey.
