T&T men’s and women’s Under-17 teams remained winless after day two of the 2019 Pan American Youth Water Polo Championships at the National Aquatic Centre in Balmain, Couva, on Saturday.
Following on the heels of their lopsided opening loss to Brazil (32-6) on Friday, the T&T girls were crushed by the USA 27-2, with Aboe Valentine and Brianne Jordan the only players on target for the host country.
In the two other girls’ matches, Argentina and Brazil fought out a thrilling 11-11 draw while Canada blasted Peru 25-5.
On Friday, Tiffanee Green and Aaliyah Aching scored two goals each for the T&T, while Tahirah Beepat and Jordan added one each in the loss to the Brazilians.
In the first two girls’ matches, Canada defeated Argentina 17-3 and the USA punished Peru 25-5.
The local boys’ team also found the going tough on day two, as they went under to Argentina 7-29, with Yannick Robertson scoring a handful of goals and Everson Latchman and Kelvin Caesar getting the others for T&T.
Brazil meanwhile rebounded from their loss to USA by beating Peru 28-4 and the USA dominated Colombia 26-9, while Canada overwhelmed Bahamas 21-9.
On Friday, the local boys were crushed 23-6 by Canada in the first match of the evening session, with Robertson scoring twice and the trio of Jonathon Constantine, Ross Gillette, and Christian Chin Lee scoring one apiece.
The USA also won their opener 14-10 over Brazil while Argentina outscored Peru 11-7 in an all-South American battle and in the closing match Colombia steamrolled Bahamas 29-7.
Today, the ten-day competition, which is hosted by the Swimming Union of the Americans (UANA) and serves as the qualifier for the Americas region to next year’s FINA Worlds Youth Championships, will continue with both T&T teams in action.
The local girls come up against Canada from 11.40 am while the boys battle Peru.
Matches will be contested until August 23 with seven matches being contested daily up until the final day, which will feature six matches.
