Cameron Wong missed out on a place in the final of the COTECC Under-14 Trinidad Summer Bowl 2019 Singles on Tuesday when she was beaten by Antigua's Sibley Charles at the St Augustine Tennis Courts, Mc Carthy Street.
She was the lone T&T player into the round of four of the main draw yesterday, as three other players Zachery Byng, Tyler Hart and Saqiv Williams were booted out in the quarterfinal round. However, Wong who prevailed over Zoey James of Antigua and Barbuda the day before 6-4, 6-1, went down in the opening round 4-6.
But she stormed back to level the match at one-apiece with a battling 7-5 triumph in the second set. Victory though eluded her in the deciding set as Charles prevailed 6-0 for the right to contest the title match today against her compatriot Brasha Dyer, who earned her berth in the final by beating Serena Bryan of Barbados 7-5, 4-3 retired.
Earlier Byng drew first blood in his encounter with Jaiden Julien on court one by pulling off a 6-4 win for the advantage. He, however, struggled in the other two sets, surrendering 2-6, 0-6. Simultaneously on court two, Hart was defeated by Mackai Whitter of Bermuda 6-4, 7-6(5), while Williams lost to Guyana's Vadeanand Resaul in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
T&T will now seek medals in the consolation singles with Alex Chin into the semis with a 4-1, 4-2 win over Zachariah Permell: James Hadden beating Daniel Jeary 1-4, 4-2, 10-2: Jaydon Chapman prevailing over Alexander Merry 4-5, 4-2, 10-5: and Luca Denoon defeating Isaiah Boxill 4-1, 5-3.
Meanwhile, in the J5 Tacarigua International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour at the National Racquet Centre (NRC) in Tacarigua, the T&T players struggled on the day in the singles. Charlotte Ready went down to Cadence Brace (Canada) 6-1, 6-0: Isabel Abraham was beaten by Tangia Riley Codrington (Barbados) 6-2, 6-2: Shauna Valentine losing to Jade Marie of France 6-0, 6-0: and Osenyonye N'wokolo surrendering to Audrey Moutama of France 6-3, 6-0.
