Iëre X Tabago: A Choral Jubilee, a concert held in celebration of T&T’s 60th Anniversary of Independence, took place July 31 at NAPA in Port-of-Spain
Based on names given to T&T by the First People community, “Iëre” (the land of the humming bird) and “Tabago” (the first place to rest), the concert showcased five choral ensembles accompanied by the steelpan and other percussive instruments. It was a celebration of T&T’s history from pre-colonialism to post independence and beyond aimed at reinforcing national pride and revitalising hope as the country celebrates its Diamond Jubilee.
Bishop Anstey High School Choir, BP Marionettes Chorale, The Lydian Singers, Eh Bien Oui Don Don, Signal Hill Alumni and UWI Arts Steel, were each allocated 15 minute sets to perform repertoire in alignment with folk, traditional spiritual, calypso, soca, and patriotic genres all woven together by narration. To close off each half of the event, two joint choral pieces performed.
Natalia Dopwell and Victoria Griffith were featured as solo performers.
