Beauty queen Te`Amun (pen name) is the author of the children’s book, Calypso Baby which promotes knowing the calypsonian icons.
Amun said she worked as a student aid and much of their activities at the time were formatted around music.
The Marabella woman said it dawned on her that most of the music which the children were privy to and enjoyed were foreign nursery rhymes. She said she contended with the idea and was guided by her late grandmother Mary Williams to produce the book over two years.
The book consists of a story, activity log, and word searches for over 100 calypsonians and graphics by Denzel Hercules.
“It was during the pandemic I came up with the idea to do the book on the local artistes. I want to create not compete with the different authors; and I wanted to produce things that don’t exist,” Amun said.
Copies of the books Calypso Baby penned by Te` Amun.
A wife and mother of two; the 30-year-old Amun said her focus is to develop the Calypso Baby brand. She said she is exploring the options to produce her other books with an emphasis on the steelpan and the indigenous people of T&T.
Amun said she was motivated to continue when through the Ministry of Tourism and Culture she applied for a grant, on the level of the Culture and Creative Arts Fund to assist with the promotion of the books.
Through the fund, she said she managed to print copies and market the book. She said she has since sent a letter to the Ministry of Education’s CEO seeking approval to get the book on the school’s syllabus.
Amun was a former participant in Miss Regal T&T, Miss Point Fortin Carnival Queen, Miss World 2015, and most recently second runner-up in Miss World T&T.
