Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley wants Attorney General Gavin Nicholas to clarify statements he made in 2006 where he accused both the PNM and then Opposition UNC of being controlled by drug lords and big businesses.
At a political meeting in La Horquetta on Tuesday evening, Rowley read a T&T Guardian report from 2006 when Nicholas was the leader for the Movement for National Development.
"Drug lords controlling the PNM and the UNC. The same man who today is th UNC's Attorney General, he is on recored telling this country that he is of the view and he knows that drug lords are controlling the PNM and the UNC," Rowley said.
Rowley told Nicholas, who is contesting the Diego Martin North East, to clarify if that alleged practice is still going on inside the ruling party.
"What are you doing as attorney general in response to that?" he asked.
Responding to Rowley's statement in a telephone interview, Nicholas described it as ridiculous and ludicrous.
"As far as I am aware, the UNC is not run by drug lords, but I am not quite sure about the PNM's position and maybe the Opposition Leader would like to enlighten the public?" Nicholas said.
Nicholas said Rowley "does not have a clue" about what he is doing, so he is resorting to saying such "foolishness" on the platform.
