An Adverse Weather Alert (Yellow Level) has been issued for Trinidad and Tobago, going into effect at 4:00 am on Wednesday.
The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) says the alert will remain in effect through 6:00 pm Wednesday. This alert is in effect for Tobago and offshore areas and to a lesser extent Trinidad.
According to the TTMS, "While mixed conditions are expected over the next 24 hours, there is a high (70%) potential for moderate to heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms initially favoring Tobago and offshore areas from early morning. Activity is expected to spread across Trinidad as the day progresses. Localized flooding and gusty winds in excess of 55 km/hr are likely in areas of heavy showers or thunderstorms."
The color of the alert indicates the severity of the event and the probability of the event occurring. Currently, the alert level is at yellow. This means that the hazard is likely, but the severity of impacts is moderate for this particular alert. You should be aware of the hazards in your area associated with gusty winds in excess of 55 KM/H, street, and flash flooding as well as landslides.
For a moderate Adverse Weather Alert, there is the potential for possible injuries, where behavioral changes are required to ensure safety. There may be minor property damage, with income-earning temporarily disrupted, and a couple of communities are affected.
The Met Office advises the public to monitor updates from official sources.
The latest, official forecast for Trinidad and Tobago for tonight from the TTMS calls for initially fair conditions, becoming partly cloudy or cloudy towards midnight with showers in some areas. There is a 60-70% (medium-high) chance of isolated thunderstorm activity in some areas, especially Tobago.
For tomorrow, the TTMS is forecasting " Partly cloudy/cloudy with showers, at times heavy, in varying areas. There is a 60-70% (medium-high) chance of isolated thunderstorms in a few areas. Settled evening/night with lingering showers in a few areas. Gusty winds and street/flash flooding can accompany showers/thunderstorms."
A Hazardous Seas Alert (Yellow Level) is also in effect for near shore areas of Tobago as well as northern and western sheltered areas of Trinidad from 11:00 PM Tuesday through 2:00 pm Friday.
