Investigations have been launched into the discovery of over 100 rounds of assorted ammunition, which had been hidden on the compound of the Transit Police Unit located at VMCOTT, off the Beetham Highway, Beetham.
Police said at about 10:30 am on Wednesday, the ammunition was discovered in an underground storage tank by a plumbing supervisor assigned to the Ministry of Works and Transport.
The supervisor reportedly told police he was doing routine checks and works on a valve to the tank, when he saw a black bag.
He removed the bag and opened it, only to discover several rounds of ammunition. He told police the items were all water soaked and covered in dirt.
The supervisor immediately notified the police at the station and a party of officers led by W-Sgt THomas, Sgt Ramsingh, and others, responded.
Police said that in the bag, they found 40 rounds of 9 mm ammunition; 60 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunition; two red cylindrical objects resembling shot gun cartridges; and one warped object, believed to be another round of 5.56mm ammunition.
The items were taken to the Morvant Police Station.
No one was arrested but investigations are ongoing.
