The attorney for Andrew Mathura, 65, the father of Hannah Mathura, says she plans to apply for bail for her client soon, as his health is worsening in prison.
Mathura and his wife, Alana, were arrested and charged with the murder of their daughter Hannah on October 16.
According to Tahirah Davis Gibson-Sobers, Mathura suffers from hypertension, and the medication he is using is not working.
“His health continues to depreciate; there is no change in terms of him getting better in terms of his blood pressure,” she said.
She said her team was waiting on certain information, and once they received it, they would proceed with the application.
“I can’t say whether it will be next week or the week after,” she said.
Hannah was 18 at the time of her death in 2017. Her remains were found buried in the backyard of the family’s Valsayn home in March this year after police received a tip-off from one of her siblings.
Her mother, Alana, died at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex weeks after being arrested, on October 29.
Gibson-Sobers said Andrew was not coping well with his wife’s death, and the children were worried that they would lose him too.
“All the children involved are really concerned, and like any other family, they are just trying to cope as best as they can,” she said.
This is why Gibson-Sobers plans to apply for bail before his sufficiency hearing on April 1, 2026.
“I do not think that the prison service is now capable of managing his health as it continues to depreciate,” Gibson-Sobers stated.
She said her client had yet to learn that the prison's probe found his late wife's rape claims false.
