Over three thousand people - 3,640 to be exact- have taken the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID vaccine in the last three days after this country’s vaccination drive began on Tuesday.
This brings the total number of people inclusive of healthcare workers, who were vaccinated with the doses gifted by Barbados, to be administered the shots to 4,777.
In a statement yesterday, the Ministry of Health said it was thankful for the high turnout of citizens taking the COVID vaccine.
The ministry said, “The Ministry of Health thanks the public for the high levels of COVID-19 vaccine uptake throughout the country.”
But it also acknowledged the teething issues that exist and advised the public that it is continuously evaluating the system and is in the process of implementing solutions aimed at customer service improvement.
The Ministry of Health added the public will begin to experience the impact of these improvements over the next week.
It stressed that despite the setbacks daily targets are being met and even surpassed in some instances.
Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said they were aiming to administer 1,000 shots a day.
Currently, healthcare workers and those aged 60 and over with Non-communicable (NCDs) (such as hypertension and diabetes) have been prioritised to receive the vaccine.
Meanwhile, the number of positive COVID cases in the country continues to climb.
Yesterday the ministry reported 41 positive cases, which brought the number of active cases to 432.
