Fish sales have dropped drastically in Chaguanas.
Fishermen operating in the Felicity area told Guardian Media that the rise in COVID-19 cases has resulted in a large number of consumers choosing to do without the product during the Lenten season when sales would have been usually high.
Guardian Media visited fishermen who usually moor their vessels along the banks of the Cunupia River at Cacandee Road, Felicity and then make their way into the Gulf of Paria.
Sumraj Balram, 48, said he is now unemployed.
Balram said he worked for a boat owner who sold the vessel since fishing became unprofitable when the price of fuel went up.
Balram said he then started purchasing fish to sell but sales have slowed down considerably since residents have started staying at home to avoid contracting COVID-19.
Balram said he plans on applying for a food card from the Ministry of Social Development to see him through the hard days ahead.
Romano Moraldo said catching fish in the Gulf of Paria was getting harder even though there were fewer boats fishing.
