As job losses continue through the COVID-19 pandemic, terminated workers of Trinidad Packaging Limited (TPL) are demanding payment of retrenchment and severance benefits.
More than a dozen workers who received retrenchment letters last Monday gathered at the company's compound, this morning.
They say not only are they hurt at losing their jobs, they also are worried about their inability to service their debts, such as mortgages and vehicle loans.
According to the employees, they were informed on February 15th that TPL will no longer exist. The company gave 45 days’ notice of retrenchment to over 40 workers.
Workers say the company took this decision unilaterally, disregarding ongoing discussions with the Oilfields Workers' Trade Union (OWTU).
TPL is a subsidiary of Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL).
