Fyzabad MP Dr Lackram Bodoe is calling for the implementation of electronic monitoring bracelets for domestic violence perpetrators who have protection orders against them.
Describing the incidents of domestic violence in this country as extremely alarming, Bodoe made the call during a walk against domestic violence in his constituency on Saturday.
The walk began with a prayer service in front of the Fyzabad home of Gabriella Dubarry, 28, who was allegedly shot dead in that house by her estranged husband last month. She is one of four women who were murdered by their former intimate partners for this year.
Several groups, relatives and friends of Dubarry, as well as other individuals, were among those who participated in the march. In an interview with reporters at Jebhodsingh Avenue, Bodoe said, “It is really to send a message to Trinidad and Tobago but more so a message to those who are the perpetrators and more importantly to parents and society.”
He said there have been several proposed amendments to the Domestic Violence Act including the issue of no bail for breaching protection orders. “The other matter of importance which I have raised in Parliament would be the issue of electronic monitoring bracelets with electronic monitoring for those who are on protection orders.”
He said in the 23 states in the America where this measure has been implemented there has been a decrease in domestic violence murders.
“The matter is before the Cabinet as far as I understand, but I want to call upon the Minister of National Security to consider implementing this measure as soon as possible.”
Another important amendment, he said, is to make it mandatory for people who observe domestic violence incidents to report it to the police. The walk ended at his constituency office with a prayer service.
