Shane Ramjattan has been fined $600 and given seven days to pay or serve two months in prison.
He appeared before Senior Magistrate Rae Roopchand in the Rio Claro Magistrate's First court charged with wasteful employment of police time by making a false report to constable Majid Khan that he was kidnapped on January 15 at Barrackpore and kept in a forested area against his will.
Ramjattan apologised in open court to everyone in the country for his actions.
The salesman admitted that he gambled away the day's sales and was afraid to face his employer.
Last week, police launched a massive search for the 24-year-old after he was reported missing.
He emerged three days later claiming that he was kidnapped and detailed an ordeal which involved him being taken to out to sea by Spanish speaking men.
