Caught breaking into a woman’s home in Marabella, a 55-year-old man will serve the next seven months in jail.
This is not the first time Elvis Soodeen, also called Davenand Kissoon, will be serving a jail term.
His criminal record showed he had 24 previous convictions in the last ten years.
He admitted to being a drug addict when he appeared before San Fernando magistrate Lisa Singh-Phillip during a virtual hearing.
He faced four charges in total, including attempted housebreaking, possession of housebreaking implements, and two counts of larceny.
He pleaded guilty to all the charges.
Sooden was charged by WPC Nicole St John and PC Dario Ramlal of the Marabella Police Station.
Court prosecutor Sgt Harold Ishmael said the first incident took place on June 20. Around 7.30 am a man parked his van near Market Street, Marabella and left.
He returned a half- an- hour later and discovered the van’s battery valued at $800 missing.
Six days later, the owner of a vegetable stall in Marabella secured his place and left. When he returned two days later he discovered a $600 plastic folding table, a $400 scale, and several snacks valued $500 missing.
When he was arrested, Soodeen admitted to PC Ramlal that he stole the battery and the other items to “buy a smoke.”
And on July 5, a resident of Stollmyer Street, Marabella, called the police to report that a man tried to break into her house.
When the police arrived, the resident took the officers to the back of the house.
She pointed to Soodeen who was seated on the step and told WPC St John that he was the person trying to break into her house with a steel hammer.
St John arrested and charged him.
He was sentenced to 30 days and 40 days imprisonment on the larceny offences, 30 days for the housebreaking implements, and seven months on the attempted housebreaking charge.
However, the sentences were ordered to run concurrently.
