While southerners are worried about the collapse of an under-construction section of Solomon Hochoy Highway Extension to Point Fortin Project, the National Infrastructure Development Company Limited (NIDCO) says it does not pose an immediate threat to road users.
Motorists and commuters flooded social media with videos and photographs of the collapsed roadway at Mosquito Creek, South Oropouche, on Saturday.
In a media release yesterday, NIDCO confirmed that a slope instability occurred on a section of the creek, which is currently under construction.
“NIDCO advises that the failure does not impact the existing flow of traffic at the Mosquito Creek nor does it pose any immediate threat to vehicular traffic or road users using the South Trunk Road.”
It said the exact cause of the instability is under investigation.
However, the engineers on the project previously noted that the Mosquito Creek area was at the highest risk of failure during construction. It was due to the prevailing geotechnical conditions of the soil.
Continuous construction loads and the traversing of heavy construction equipment, coupled with unfinished work, may have caused the instability.
NIDCO said its consulting engineering firm AECOM would develop the relevant designs to repair the failed area to prevent any further occurrence or future disruption to traffic.
